Jackets fly at track & field opener

CEDARVILLE —The Cedarville University men’s and women’s track teams turned in solid finishes at Saturday’s Yellow Jacket Collegiate Open.

The men’s team finished first in the 17-team season opening event, while the women placed second among 19 teams.

Daniel Michalski of Xenia won two events, and the Cedarville men’s team claimed five total, to take the team title in the Yellow Jacket Collegiate Open in the teams’ first meet of the outdoor campaign.

Michalski paced a 1-2-3 CU showing in the 800 meters in 1:53.71. He also won the 5,000 meters in 15:21.42.

Wyatt Hartman crossed the line first in the 1,500 with a mark of 4:01.37. Ethan Sullivan won the 10,000 meter run in 34:04.37 with Josiah Bernard running to victory in the 400 meter hurdles in 56.08 seconds.

Ethan Gatchell was the runner-up in the 800 in 1:54.81 while Hartman was third at 1:55.03.

The Yellow Jackets men had second-place showings in two field events. Those came from freshman Kevin Knox in the javelin with a toss of 185 feet, 1 inch (56.42 meters) and Samuel Tvardzik in the triple jump at 42-9.75 (13.05m).

Cedarville won with 166 points. Mount Union was the runner-up with 155 points and Otterbein was third with 86.

The Cedarville women’s team won four events and finished as the runner-up in the Yellow Jacket Collegiate Open.

Wright State totaled 138.5 points to win the 19-team event. The Lady Jackets had 122 points and third-place Mount Union ended up with 110.

Carsyn Koch met the NCAA Division II provisional mark in the 400 meters with a winning time of 55.53 seconds. It’s the fifth-fastest time in CU history.

Alaina Spears led a 1-2-3 Lady Jacket finish in the 10,000 meters at 39:52.02. She was followed by Christy Jesson (40:06.55) and Kayla Casaletto (40:29.71).

In the field events, freshman Courtney Kohler won the javelin with a heave of 126-8 (38.60 meters). Lyndsey Smith took first in the long jump at 18-1.75 (5.53 m).

Mariah Cruise was sixth in the shot put at 39-7.75 (12.08), but her mark tied for fourth place on the Lady Jackets’ all-time list.

Elsewhere, Smith was the runner-up in the 200-meter dash (25.71). Sarah Hoffman was second in the 800 (2:18.54) while Kacy Dunn was third in the 1,500 (4:44.62).

Next Up: The Yellow Jacket men’s and women’s teams will compete in the Hanover Invitational, starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1 in Hanover, Ind.
