Knowles signs with N.C. State

XENIA — Eric Knowles of Xenia Legacy Christian Academy has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete on the North Carolina State swim team.

Knowles is a member of the National Junior Team, which recognizes the top-26 male swimmers 18 and under in the U.S.A., and he’s recognized by USA Swimming as one of the nation’s top 100 swimmers 18 and under.

N.C. State reportedly plans on using Knowles in mid-distance events and individual medley events.

Cedarville falls to Dayton Christian

CEDARVILLE — Visiting Dayton Christian led 8-5 after one quarter of play, then the Warriors outscored Cedarville 43-14 in the second and third quarters combined to eventually claim a 57-33 win, Saturday. No individual statistics were reported for Cedarville. Matt Welker led Dayton Christian with 15 points scored.

Bellbrook defeats Polar Bears

DAYTON — After losing to Franklin, 79-61, Friday, Bellbrook rebounded with a 67-57 road win Saturday over Dayton Northridge. Donnie Crouch scored a game-high 23 points and Ethan Savey added 19 for the Golden Eagles (2-2, 1-2 Southwestern Buckeye League Southwestern Division). Bellbrook is done playing boys high school basketball in 2016. The Glden Eagles head to Germantown to take on the Valley View Spartans 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017 for their next scheduled game.

Carroll stays unbeaten

CINCINNATI — Trailing 23-20 at halftime, Carroll outscored Cincinnati Purcell Marian 14-9 in the third quarter on its way to a 43-37 win, Saturday. Amanda Schroeder led Carroll with 22 points, Ellie Rumme scored nine, Morgan King eight while Sydney Ingram and Allie Stefanek two each. The Patriots are now 8-0 overall, 2-0 in the Greater Catholic League Co-Ed North Division.

Carroll plays in the Wapakoneta Holiday Tournament, Dec. 27 and 30.

Skyhawks rally past Springfield

SPRINGFIELD — Visiting Fairborn trailed 18-10 at the break, then was down 24-15 after three quarters of play, but the Skyhawks dropped 21 points in the fourth quarter to win, 36-34, Saturday.

Evelyn Oktavec led Fairborn (2-5, 1-2 Greater Western Ohio Conference American South) with 15 points, while Khala Powell added nine. Fairborn, which has won its last two games, plays at Xenia 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21.

Golden Eagles nab first place

BELLBROOK — In a battle for first place in the Southwestern Buckeye League’s Southwestern Division, host Bellbrook outscored Monroe in each quarter, and limited the Hornets to just two points in the fourth, to win, 41-27 Saturday. Cassidy Hofacker led the Eagles with 14 points. Bellbrook is now the only Southwestern Division team yet to be beaten. The Golden Eagles are 5-2 overall, 3-0 SWBL Southwestern. Bellbrook will take on Cincinnati Glen Este 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28 in the first round of the Lakota West Holiday tournament.

Bulldogs defeat Middletown Christian

MIDDLETOWN — Morgan Minnich scored 20 points, Elizabeth Smith added 14, and Ayanna Madison tossed in 13 as visiting Yellow Springs claimed a 65-48 girls basketball win Friday.

Yellow Springs (4-2, 1-1 Metro Buckeye Conference) played at West Carrollton, Monday night. The Bulldogs return home Thursday, Dec. 29 when they’ll host Springfield Northeastern for a 6 p.m. game.

Beavers fend off Lebanon

BEAVERCREEK — After scoring six points in the third quarter to enable visiting Lebanon to get within four points of the lead (35-31), host Beavercreek outscored the Warriors 26-21 in the final quarter of play to escape with a 61-52 win Friday night at Beavercreek. The Beavers’ Peyton Young led all scorers with 17 points while teammate Jon Alessandro finished with 13 points.

Beavercreek (4-1, 2-1 Greater Western Ohio Conference National East) plays at Chaminade-Julienne 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20

Eagles defeat Yellow Springs

MIDDLETOWN — Three Middletown Christian players scored in double figures Friday in a 53-43 win over visiting Yellow Springs. No individual statistics were reported for Yellow Springs, but the Bulldogs dropped to 0-5 overall, 0-2 Metro Buckeye Conference with the loss.

Patriots edged on the road

CINCINNATI — Knotted up at 27-all after three quarters of play, host Cincinnati Purcell Marian outscored Carroll 15-13 in the final quarter to win, 42-40, in Greater Catholic League Co-Ed boys basketball win Friday. Joe Cogan led the Patriots (1-4, 0-2 GCL Co-Ed North) with 11 points, while T.K. Robinson finished with nine points.

Carroll visits Valley View 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22.

Schoening’s 500 series leads Patriots

RIVERSIDE — Jacob Schoening rolled a 543 two-game series, and Brody Dixon tossed a 485, to lead the Carroll boys bowling team to Thursday’s 2,636 to 2,448 win over Hamilton Badin. Schoening’s second game was a 297. Carroll is now 4-1 overall, 3-1 GCL Co-Ed.

Rams beat Carroll

RIVERSIDE — Brittney Blaschek led the Carroll girls bowling team with a 365 two-game series, but Hamilton Badin won the team match with a 2,170 score to the Patriots’ 1,657. Carroll’s boys and girls teams (1-5 overall, 1-3 GCL Co-Ed) return to action 4 p.m. Jan. 3 at Colerain Bowl to take on St. Bernard Roger Bacon.

Xenia Athletic Hall of Fame ceremonies set

XENIA — The 2016 class of inductees to the Xenia Hall of Fame will be introduced at the Jan. 13, 2017 Xenia High School boys varsity basketball game. This is the sixth class to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The 2016 Hall of Fame class, consisting of William “Bill” Wilson (track, and cross country coach 1954-‘79); Dr. David Hazel (football, track, class of 1970); Erin Hawley (swimming, 2008); Kristi Cope Elsman (soccer, basketball, 1993); Nick Ungard (golf, basketball, 1952); Richard Bennett (educator, coach, civic leader, 2016); Shawn Thigpen (basketball, track, 1993); Steve Smith (wrestling, 1988); and the 1985-86 XHS wrestling team, will attend the induction ceremony, which is set for 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017 at Faith Community United Methodist Church, 100 Country Club Dr. Any community member may attend. Fairborn induction set for Jan. 14

FAIRBORN — The Fairborn High School Athletic Department will host its third Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony beginning with a 4:30 p.m. dinner Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017 in the FHS Commons.

The 2016 Hall of Fame class consists of Ed McCloud (Fairborn class of 1964, football, baseball); Jackie (Smith) Whitaker (Park Hills class of 1981, volleyball, basketball, softball); Veasna Tith (Fairborn class of 1998, tennis); Fred J. Buschmeyer (Fairborn track and field, cross country, basketball coach); and the 1970 boys basketball district championship team.

The official induction ceremony will take place approximately 7 p.m. after the reserve boys basketball game at Baker Memorial Fieldhouse.
