FRED J. BUSCHMEYER

(Coach, Fairborn HS – Track & Field/Cross Country/Basketball)

Fred J. Buschemeyer, a Medway native and Wittenberg University graduate, joined the Osborn-Bath Consolidated Schools in 1936. He was the head basketball coach for 14 seasons, compiling 120 wins and 91 losses and winning a Little Six League championship in 1943-‘44. Buschmeyer introduced both track and cross country to the athletic program, taking what were frequently regarded as “minor” sports and starting the record and tradition which made them Fairborn’s most successful athletic endeavors.

His track teams won 124 dual meets, the Lanier Relays, in Eaton, in 1940 and 1941, and a Little Six League title in 1950. In 1944, his team finished fourth in the Ohio State Class B track meet, with two team members being crowned state champions. Coach Buschemeyer was a registered track official for more than 20 years and served as official finish judge at the Ohio State track and field meets for more than 26 years. He was inducted into the Ohio Association of Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 1973. Retiring from the coaching ranks, Buschemeyer became an assistant principal and athletic director at F.H.S. Being an educator 42 years, he retired in 1978. He was posthumously honored with the playing surface at Fairborn Memorial Stadium being named Buschemeyer Field.

The 1970 BOYS BASKETBALL DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM

This was when the district tournament included 28 teams. This team was the Regional runner-up, losing in the finals to the eventual undefeated state champion, Dayton Chaminade. This is still the best finish in the history of Fairborn basketball in the state tournament, finishing as one of the top eight teams in the state. After making some coaching adjustments, the team finished 14-3 at the end of the season.

They tied the school record at the time with the most wins at 17. The ‘70 team brought pride to the community as tickets sold out for the Cincinnati Regional games and the whole town got behind them, as downtown stores had signs of support for the Fairborn Flyers. The team was coached by the late Jake Brummet. Team members included Tom Carroll, Brent Cartwright, Daryl Douple, Steve Fulton, Dennis Graham, Steve Greene, Kirk Minteer, Doug Schively, Jeff Taylor, Pat White and Gary Wright. Team manager and trainer were Mike Brown and Pat McCoart.

The induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, beginning with a 4:30 p.m. dinner in the Fairborn High School Commons. The official induction ceremony will take place at approximately 7 p.m. after the junior varsity boys basketball game and right before the scheduled 7:30 p.m. boys varsity game, at the Baker Memorial Fieldhouse, located at Baker Middle School, in Fairborn.
