DAYTON — Two Fairborn residents were on the Dayton Boat Club masters rowing teams that took home one gold medal and two silver medals at the 30th annual Head of the Ohio regatta, Saturday, Oct. 1 in Pittsburgh.
The mixed eight, the team’s premier race, took gold, finishing 37 seconds ahead of second-place Three Rivers Rowing Association in the seven-team event. The men’s four and the women’s four both took silver medals. Fairborn resident Vicki Schwab rowed in both the mixed eight and the women’s four; Judi DeSimio of Fairborn was the coxswain for the men’s four.
All of the races were 2.6 miles down the Allegheny River in downtown Pittsburgh, passing under seven bridges from Washington Landing past PNC Park and Heinz Field.
“After a successful sprint season in the summer, we started training in August for our long-distance races, and the hard work paid off,” said Julie Wittmann of Dayton, a local teacher and former Division I collegiate rower who coaches the team with Marty Carrabine of Dayton. “The course was almost 5,000 meters, which is a grueling race, and the competition was tough, but we started and finished strong in all three events.”
The Head of the Ohio, one of the largest regattas in the country, attracts more than 2,000 rowers from the United States and Canada and more than 75 high schools, colleges, universities and clubs.
Other DBC team members competing Oct. 1 included Pete Hoshor and Timmy Wells of Centerville; Lisa Wilson of Dayton; Vince Leopold and Jane Wittmann of Oakwood; Dean Pocius and Maureen Schlangen of Kettering; and Bob Potter of Morrow. Other coxswains for the day’s races were Julie Wittmann and Becky Rounds of Dayton.
DBC has both competitive and recreational options for new and experienced rowers. The winter indoor season begins in early December at the downtown Dayton YMCA. For information, see www.daytonboatclub.org/adult-winter-erging.html.
Dayton Boat Club is part of Dayton Regional Rowing, the nation’s only Community Olympic Development Program in the sport.
