FAIRBORN — Fairborn made it two wins in a row and three of its last four with a 5-0 tennis win Monday, Aug. 29 over Dayton Northridge.

The wins have helped the Skyhawks overcome a slow start and improve to 3-5 overall heading into a Tuesday night match with Sidney.

Fairborn lost one game against Northridge. Brooklyn Hunter won, 6-0, 6-0, at first singles; Acadia Wulf won, 6-0, 6-1, at second singles; and Kyla Secrest won, 6-0, 6-0 at third singles.

“It would have been easy to go out tonight and coast and lose some games that we shouldn’t have, but still won,” coach Doug Coy said. “Honestly, I think that last year we might have done that. But the girls have really matured and improved their games to the point that when they get a chance to put an opponent away early on, they do it now.”

Both doubles teams swept their opponents, Preslee Chapman and Shayna Osborne at first doubles and Megan Koonce and Paige Murry at second doubles.

“I was pleased with how our doubles teams (played) tonight,” Coy said. “We stress good and aggressive net play in doubles and they really did well at that tonight. Like with singles, we are seeing a lot of improvement in our doubles play this year.”

The reserve team won, 3-2. Dakota Thacker won, 8-0, Jayna Varner lost, 3-8, Tiana Thomas won, 8-3, and McKayla Lyons won, 8-7, at singles. Makayla Byndom and Amanda Wilson lost, 3-6, at doubles.

The Skyhawks beat Huber Heights Wayne, 5-0, on Aug. 27.

Hunter was first off, winning 6-2, 6-3 at first singles. Wulf and her opponent split the first two sets, with Wulf winning 6-4 and losing 3-6. Since the overall match was already decided, they played a 10-point tiebreaker to determine the winner, with Wulf posting a 10-7 win. Secrest won 6-2, 6-3 at third singles, digging herself out of a 3-1 deficit in the second set.

Osborne and Chapman won 7-5, 6-2 at first doubles, coming back from a 4-1 deficit in the first set. Koonce and Murry teamed up for the first time at second doubles, winning 6-4, 6-0. They were the fourth doubles combination in seven matches.

The reserve team won both matches. Varner and Thomas won 8-4 and then Varner won a singles match 6-2.
