XENIA — Captain Austin McDowell was born near Pittsburgh in 1815. He became a carpenter then came to Xenia where he went into the lumber yard business with a partner. He was selected Captain of a unit during the Mexican War, but his unit was not needed. When the Civil War broke out, he became a Captain in the 74th OVI serving until he was injured in 1862 and captured by John Morgan’s Raiders and later released. Later that year, he joined the 128th OVI mustering out in 1865. McDowell Lake at the OSSO Home was named in his honor.
