Devotional: The crossing over

0

“I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.” (John 5:24)

The truth is rather important when it comes to the subject of death. We don’t want someone deceiving us about life after death. Jesus makes a promise that all who believe, trust and confess him have eternal life. They have new life now and into the life after physical death. Jesus also made it clear, however, that this witness originates from God, the Father. They are in this together with the Holy Spirit, to make this marvelous transformation in people’s lives.

We do not often think of eternal life beginning now. We think of it as life beyond our physical death. That is not how Jesus or the apostles’ speak of it. Once we have been given the free gift of trusting and confessing Jesus we see a difference in our quality of life here and now. Any fear of our future death slips away and new life impacts us immediately. We become, as St. Paul said, “new creations.” We will never be the same because we have been reborn by the Holy Spirit, children of God.

Heavenly Father, thank you for sharing the truth in Jesus. He is all you are and came to save us. Build on the faith you have given us with a strength to live and share the good news. Thank you for your gift of eternal life through Jesus. We have indeed crossed over from death to life, even now. In his name. Amen.
