Can a private company refuse to provide contraception insurance coverage, which is against the company owner’s religious views, to employees under the Obamacare law? Can a parent of a child or an adult requiring around the clock health care by that parent(s) be forced to join a public employee union and/or pay union dues for caring for their child?

That was the law in Illinois. Both decisions, very close rulings, came down on the side of individual freedom and individual rights and against big government mandates this past week. That’s a switch from the path our country has been on lately. It’s fitting these decisions, honoring America as the founders saw it, came down the week of Independence Day.

Hobby Lobby, a private company, did not want to go against its owner’s personal, religious views and provide contraception options in health care provided by that employer under mandate by The Affordable Care Act.

Could this be the first step in dismantling, piece by piece, this unconstitutional universal health care system that will ultimately destroy our economy and peoples’ lives? That’s yet to be seen but every step in this direction is a good one.

The public union decision is near and dear to our hearts in the Scinto household. Our 17-year-old daughter, who turns 18 and becomes an adult next year is 100 percent disabled and under our care as her parents. That will be the case as long as her Mom and I are able. If we lived under Governor Quinn in Illinois we would have to join a public state union and/or pay monthly union dues as her caregivers even though we are also her parents.

It would also open up to public scrutiny and viewing our daughter’s health records. We thank God this was struck down! This would be a violation of everything that binds a family together and violates our rights as parents to choose not to be controlled by a heavy-handed union against our wishes.

I’ll temper my excitement with the reality of living under a president who, by his own admission, will change, rewrite or override Congressional or court decisions based on what he believes needs to be done or is in his own political interest. Does that mean he could cast aside these decisions and issue executive orders to the contrary? You bet it does.

Will he do that? Only time will tell. He hasn’t avoided giving an obscene gesture to lawmakers and the American people in the past. Let’s see how far he’s willing to go. He seems to bask in the glory of firsts; the first black President and Obamacare, our first universal health debacle. If he pushes it, there’s still time for another Obama first; the first US President convicted in impeachment proceedings and shown the door to the White House.
