FAIRBORN — Fairborn students will only have to make up one snow day in June with the use of blizzard bags.

The Fairborn City Schools have used 11 calamity days due to snow and extreme cold temperatures. State legislators voted March 12 to allow schools to write off up to four calamity days in addition to the five already allowed by the state.

With that change, Fairborn currently has four days to make up. The “blizzard bags” option can be used for up to three make-up days. Typically, blizzard bags resolutions must be approved prior to Aug. 1, but the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) extended the option due to this year’s severe winter weather.

“The district passed a resolution on March 13, 2014 to utilize blizzard bags to help offset school days missed this past winter,” said Superintendent Dave Scarberry. “With the use of blizzard bags, Fairborn City Schools will only have to make up one day at the end of this school year.”

Blizzard bags are online or take-home lessons that students complete to make up a missed day of school. Assignments will be available online through Progress Book or as “take home” hard copy assignments for students to complete.

The blizzard bag assignments will be posted online or handed out to students on Friday, April 11, prior to spring break. All assignments will be due on Tuesday, May 6.

“If you have questions, please contact your child’s teacher or the principal of your child’s school,” Scarberry said. “We hope that the use of Blizzard Bags will be beneficial to your child’s education and success.”

With one additional day to be made up at the end of the year, the last day of school for Fairborn students will now be June 2.
