XENIA — The Xenia Community Schools have a school calendar for the 2014-2015 academic year and there are changes from past schedules.
The next academic year for students will begin Aug. 18, bringing one parent to the Feb. 10 Board of Education meeting with concerns about the late summer heat at Warner Middle School. The parent stated that with non-air conditioned portions of Warner, the temperature can reach an unhealthy level that caused her daughter to become ill this past year during a warm spell.
The board said it will look into a solution for those rooms that need cooling.
A plus to the new calendar will be that, when students leave for the winter break, they will be completely done with the first semester.
“It will be better without coming back from break for those ‘orphan’ days,” board member Dr. Robert Dillaplain said. He said the “handful of days” that remain in the first semester after the break are more or less wasted time as there isn’t enough time to study for upcoming testing while finishing out the second grading period.
The school schedule has days off set for Sept. 1 for Labor Day and Sept. 26 for a Waiver Day in the first grading period, and WOEA Day on Oct. 17, K-12 Conference Day on Nov. 26, and Thanksgiving break on Nov. 27 and 28 as days off in the second grading period.
The first semester ends on Dec. 19, which is the beginning of Winter Break. Students will return to school Jan. 5.
The next day off will be Jan. 19 for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Students will also be off on Feb. 6 for a Waiver Day while elementary and middle school students will also be out of school Friday, Feb. 13 for a K-8 Conference Day. Xenia High School will be in session on Feb. 13. The entire district will then be out on Monday, Feb. 16 for Presidents Day.
The third grading period will end March 20, just 10 days before the students get out of school for Spring Break, March 30-April 3.
The fourth grading period will end Friday, May 22.
Excess calamity days would be made up May 26, 27, 28 and 29, and June 1 of 2015.
