One thing summer reminds me of is getting together with friends. Little Johnny was left to fix lunch. When his mother returned with a friend, she noticed that Johnny had already strained the tea. The two women then sipped their tea happily while having lunch.

“Was it hard finding the tea strainer in the kitchen?” Johnny’s mother asked. “I couldn’t find it Ma, so I used the fly swatter,” he replied. His mother nearly fainted, so Johnny hastily added: “Don’t get excited, Ma, I used the old one!”

Not only does the summer remind me of friends and sipping tea, but it reminds me of our country and all that we have been blessed with. Memorial Day and July 4th celebrations and remembrances leave me so thankful for how God has blessed us to live in this wonderful country.

Reflecting back on the summer of 2014 would leave you wondering a bit about our country and the hope of world peace. Now we all can think of things that the government needs to do to improve life and make our nation one that truly seeks after God. Our leaders are not perfect and we can always strive to be better as a nation. We can start that improvement with ourselves and fulfilling our duties to government. We should not be asking what our country can do for us, but what we can do for our country.

Here’s what we can continue to do for our country:

1. Pay for it… Render all what is due them; tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom. You may not like how much you are taxed but you cannot argue with the principle of taxation. Government must build roads, sewers, bridges, must provide armies, fire protection, city halls, policemen. Jesus paid His taxes lest there be offense.

He also said to “render unto Caesar the things that are Caesars.”

2. Pray for it… 1 Tim 2:1-3 It pleases our God when we pray for those in authority.

3. Praise it… Give honor to whom honor is due!!! Walk up to a policeman this week and say thank you. Read about a child saved in a fire and find a fireman and say, “you people are truly heroes.” Think about all your freedoms and find a serviceman or veteran and say, “God bless you.”

4. Participate in it… Just one vote can mean so much in our government.

5. Persuade it… The Only hope for any people is truth: The Word of God. “And you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” We need to persuade the people with the truth of God’s Word.
