“…declares the Lord, ‘This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.’” (Isaiah 66:2)
It is important to know how the Lord looks at us. He loves us but He also is pleased by certain characteristics that we might display. Humility seems to be at the top of the list for anyone who reveres Him. Humility is that attitude that always puts God where He belongs, First! A “contrite” or repentant spirit also is necessary for a relationship with our God because we do sin and fall short of His glory.
The only way for us to be accepted by Him is to recognize our shortfall. With that there is another element that is not mentioned but here in the Scriptures – “trembles at my word.” God’s word comes with power to create and to destroy. It is awesome to experience. It is something that shakes us to the core of our being when it is displayed.
We tremble at our baptism, at hearing the Word, and at Holy Communion. We tremble every time He speaks to our life because that speaking affects us. We have just completed a week when we trembled at the might acts of God saving us in the death and resurrection of Jesus.
The characteristics that please the Lord, humility, a contrite spirit and trembling at His Word, are gifts He gives us. They are gifts that have opened our eyes, mind and heart to His amazing Self. All of this is His doing through His amazing grace. His Word in the Scriptures have trembled us throughout our lifetime.
We have been touched by His power through His Word. We are eternally thankful.
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your grace to tremble us. Thank You for Your Word that does this. Your written Word is Your touch upon our life. Your Word and Your Spirit are an unbeatable combination for life and salvation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
