FAIRBORN — With the Colonel Glenn Highway Improvements Project ahead of schedule, engineers are planning to reopen the intersection of University Boulevard and Colonel Glenn by Tuesday to accommodate Wright State University students coming to campus.

“We hope to open that whole intersection back up to traffic just in time for school to start,” said Civil Engineer Lee Harris. “Move-in day at Wright State is Thursday, so it will be open for them and we’ll close down the center three lanes on Col. Glenn again starting Friday.”

Paving through that intersection was completed Friday and crews are ready to move on to the next phase of the project, which is expected to begin Aug. 22.

“All the detours put up on that day will then remain in place until the end of the project,” Harris said.

R.B. Jergens began construction on the roughly $1.4 million project on May 5, with phase 3B expected to begin Sept. 9 and phase 3C on Oct. 15. These two phases will now be combined beginning Aug. 22. The original completion date was Nov. 27.

“Everything is actually ahead of schedule,” Harris said. “We’re trying to get the majority of the work finished by the Air Force Marathon. If everything goes according to how we are planning it out right now, the project could possibly be finished in early to mid-October.”

This project extends from Paramount Place to University Boulevard. Improvements will include pavement rehabilitation, drainage improvements, three new concrete median islands and installing a sidewalk from the west corporation limit to University Boulevard.

The city received a $400,000 grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission, which will cover the curb, gutter, and storm sewer improvements.
