FAIRBORN — A new journal shines a spotlight on exceptional academic writing by Wright State University students.
Published by the Department of English Language and Literatures, Best Integrated Writing: Journal of Excellence in Integrated Writing at Wright State University is now available on Wright State University Libraries’ Core Scholar website.
The journal was created as a way to share excellent student writing from Integrated Writing courses in the Wright Core and in the majors.
The first issue includes essays, business writing and social science writing from students from the Colleges of Business, Education and Human Services, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Health, Science and Mathematics and Lake Campus.
“They showcase the real excellence Wright State students can attain and the dedication of Wright State faculty to student success,” said Carol Loranger, Ph.D., chair of Department of English Language and Literatures.
Scott Geisel, senior lecturer of English and the journal’s editor, sought to represent as many different fields as possible in the journal and showcase that “there’s writing in every discipline.”
Geisel and Loranger also created the journal to model excellent academic writing to students and faculty. “I have a vision that it will actually be used by people teaching Integrated Writing classes,” Geisel said.
Student essays were nominated by faculty who teach Integrated Writing courses and were selected by the journal’s editorial board, which includes Geisel and English faculty members Andrea Harris, Karen Hayes and Kathleen Kollman.
Although Best Integrated Writing is primarily an online journal, printed copies can be purchased for a nominal fee on Core Scholar. A small portion of the journal’s purchase price supports English student activities and outreach programs.
The journal is now seeking nominations for its 2015 edition. Faculty who have taught an Integrated Writing course may nominate their students’ work.
More information, including nomination policies for future issues, is available on Core Scholar at http://corescholar.libraries.wright.edu/biw/.
