FAIRBORN — April showers will bring at least one May flower to Fairborn when the winner of the Miss Poppy Contest is crowned.
The American Legion Auxiliary Dignam-Whitmore Unit 526 is again sponsoring the Miss Poppy Contest for any kindergarten or first grade girls living in the Fairborn or Bath Township area, or daughters, granddaughters or great-granddaughter of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 526 of the same age and criteria. It is not necessary that either parent be a veteran or a member of the American Legion or the American Legion Auxiliary.
Applicants must be turning six on or before June 1, 2013. Deadline for mandatory registration is Monday, April 14. If no there are no registered contestants by the deadline, the contest will be cancelled.
Judging will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27 at the Dignam-Whitmore American Legion Post, 526 Legion Lane. Parents or guardians must be present and are required to bring some form of birth date verification.
Miss Poppy is selected on the basis of appearance (25 percent), personality (25 percent) and self-assurance (50 percent). The winner will be crowned at the American Legion Auxiliary Mother & Daughter Banquet on Sunday, May 4. Miss Poppy and her mother will be guests that evening.
The prizes for Miss Poppy will be a dress for her public appearances, which include the honor of placing a poppy bouquet at the flag pole during the Memorial Day Ceremony in Fairfield Cemetery and riding in the Fourth of July Parade with the Poppy Chairman. Miss Poppy must also be available to go with the Poppy Chairman to help distribute poppies for donations during Poppy Days.
The Poppy Program is the oldest and most widely recognized Auxiliary program. Each year around Memorial Day, Auxiliary volunteers distribute millions of bright red crepe paper poppies in exchange for contributions to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans.
