ENGLEWOOD — The Ohio State Patrol is investigating a crash involving two semis and an SUV that took place around 9:30 a.m. Thursday on westbound Interstate 70 near the Hoke Road exit.

According to an OSP official, the victim was a middle aged female from the Dayton area who died at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

The OSP had not determined what triggered the accident, but were leaning toward a scenario of failure to maintain assured clear distance. Troopers think traffic might have started to slow down as it approached a construction zone located west of the Hoke Road overpass.

Troopers believe a semi ahead of the victim’s vehicle began to slow down, at which time the victim also slowed down but the semi behind her did not. Troopers believe when her vehicle was struck from behind it pushed her into the rear of the lead semi. The victim’s vehicle and the semi that struck her from behind went off the right side of the highway, up a snow covered embankment and came to rest against the guardrail on the Hoke Road off ramp.

At some point the semi that struck the victim’s vehicle rolled over the top of her vehicle from behind trapping the driver. Troopers will be attempting to see if cameras used by the Ohio Department of Transportation to monitor the interstate might have captured footage of the accident as it transpired. The driver of the semi that struck the victim’s vehicle was taken to the nearby Ohio State Patrol post in Englewood for questioning.

The name of the victim would not be released until her relatives were notified. Troopers learned her identity and said she was performing her job duties and was traveling from one job responsibility to another when the accident occurred.
