FAIRBORN — City of Fairborn council has approved a study that will help determine what improvements should be made to the intersections at the on/off ramps at I-675 and Dayton-Yellow Springs Road (DYS).
The proposed changes include the addition of a second lane on the southbound I-675 off ramp at DYS to accommodate right turn traffic, and the extension of the left turn lane onto northbound I-675 from eastbound DYS.
“The city’s goal here is to increase safety and the capacity of the signals located at these two ramps,” said Civil Engineer Lee Harris.
One goal is to add either a left through lane and a right turn lane or a left turn and right through at the southbound I-675 off ramp.
“We’re hoping that the study will help determine which is the largest movement so we can help get people through this intersection quicker and safer,” Harris said.
At the northbound on/off ramp, the Engineering Division would like to extend the left turn lane going onto northbound I-675 to make room for more vehicles and to improve traffic flow in the through lane.
“Currently we have enough space there for about two vehicles to sit at the traffic light and when we have a lot of traffic coming through the intersection sometimes we’ll get a car that will stick out into the through lane which then hurts traffic moving through the intersection,” said Harris.
Due to the fact that these two intersections are on the interchange, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) requires that an Interchange Modification Study (IMS) be performed to analyze the requested changes and determine the impact on the highway system. This study will include all the necessary data collection, documentation, meeting and ancillary items required by ODOT for completion of the study.
“They will be going out onto the Interstate, and the off and on ramps, and recording the traffic data that is currently out there. They will then use all of this data to help analyze the current way the system is operating,” said Harris. “They will help forecast the future traffic conditions with the current lane lengths and lane configurations. They will also use this data to help forecast how any of the changes they make will affect these intersections as well.”
The Engineering Division distributed four RFQ’s to qualified design firms and three qualification statements were received. ODOT requires the Qualifications Based Selection (QBS) method be used to review, rank and select the design consultant.
The highest ranked qualification statement and the selected firm was the Civil Engineer’s of Southwest Ohio located in Dayton. The fee from CESO for the scope of services for an IMS is $40,499. Funding for this study has been budgeted.
“We will be paying for the study,” Harris said. “We have been in talks with ODOT and they’re going to be helping us secure the funding to construct it once we’ve performed the study and it shows that it’s not going to have any impact to the I-675 corridor.”
