FAIRBORN — Members of the Fairborn FOP New City Lodge 48 and their families brought some holiday cheer to residents at Patriot Ridge Community this week.

The last two years, the police and fire departments were invited to the senior living community for a cookout to meet the staff and residents. The members of the Fairborn FOP were overwhelmed by the generosity of the staff and residents and wanted to show their appreaciation.

At least 20 members and their children visited Patriot Ridge on Wednesday and spent two hours mingling with the residents. Santa Claus even stopped by to pass out special ornaments made by the children of FOP members for each resident.

“We had residents who hadn’t laughed or smiled in a long time, and this made them so happy. Their eyes just lit up,” Carla Easterly from Patriot Ridge said. “The FOP members spent one-on-one time with the residents and were so involved. Everyone was touched by it. They were a loving and interactive group, and were so sincere about what they were doing. I think it was really great for our residents, the FOP and our staff.”

“I was surprised by the residents’ reactions, it was very heartfelt,” said FOP executive board member Paul Hicks. “It brought a tear to our eyes to see how excited they were. The kids enjoyed it, too.”

This was the first of what the FOP hopes will become an annual tradition.

“It gave me a new appreciation for helping people who can’t do for themselves. We look forward to doing it again,” Hicks said.
