“In both courts of the temple of the Lord, he (Manasseh, son of Hezekiah) built altars to all the starry hosts. He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced sorcery and divination, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the Lord, provoking him to anger.” (2 Kings 21:5-6)

Hezekiah for some reason was unable to pass on his faithfulness to the Lord down to his son, Manasseh. Tragedy would befall Judah in the wake of Manasseh’s disobedience. He was extreme in his disobedience, entertaining every evil and idolatry. Was it out of rebellion against his father? Sadly, he would reign fifty-five years as such an evil king. The way he desecrated the temple of God is horrifying. He led the people into pure idolatry.

There is no guarantee that our children will follow in our footsteps. Many faithful parents have seen their children head off into the world to play in its evils. Maybe because Manasseh was only twelve years old, those years of teen rebellion, when he became king, that such disobedience takes place. It is hard to imagine being that young and having the power of a king. Manasseh is such a stark contrast to his father who loved the Lord God. It is shocking and sad. It is not what we desire for our offspring.

Heavenly Father, only by Your grace can we remain faithful to You. Only Your presence with us enables us to be obedient. We cannot forget how important You are to us every moment. Forgive our sins and disobedience and overwhelm us with Your Spirit. Guild us to keep our self, family and friends faithful to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
