CSU Chorus welcomes guest conductor

WILBERFORCE — Internationally acclaimed Gospel and Jazz recording artist Damien Sneed will be the guest conductor for a performance of Wynton Marsalis’ Abyssinian Mass: A Gospel Celebration with the Central State University Chorus 7 p.m. Saturday, April 16.

The free concert is in the Paul Robeson Cultural & Performing Arts Center.

It will also feature the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Jazz Orchestra and the CCM Chorale.

The Abyssinian Mass premiered in 2008 with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and a 150-voice choir directed by Sneed. The Abyssinian Mass was commissioned to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church, under the leadership of Senior Pastor Calvin O. Butts.

Sneed has conducted the Abyssinian Mass around the world. A pianist, conductor, composer, producer and arranger, Sneed has worked with legends such as Aretha Franklin, Jessye Norman and Stevie Wonder.

The public is invited to attend.
