XENIA — The Greene County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens about Interal Revenue Service (IRS) scams appearing to originate from the sheriff’s office.

According to a release from the office, individuals demanding money and claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service have called citizens using the office’s name and number 937-562-4800 on phone caller ID.

“Please be advised this office is not calling on behalf of the federal government for any purpose at this time,” the release from the sheriff’s office stated. “The IRS scam has been a popular conduit for thieves who are overseas to bilk unsuspecting citizens of their money. If you receive any phone call demanding money and claiming to be an official with the government, don’t waste your time, hang up.”
