Cancer walk coming full Circle

SPRING VALLEY — The 24th Annual Circle of Victory Cancer Awareness Walk (COV) is poised to raise more than $70,000 on Sunday, Oct. 1 as the Foundation and local volunteers continue the tradition of bringing survivors, families and community friends together to help Greene County cancer patients.

This year Spring Valley’s Dale and Marcie Hagler and their Apple Country Farm Market will host Circle of Victory for the first time. In addition to the walk, participants will have the opportunity to experience the corn maze itself and all of the other activities the farm provides.

The event will include the walk on a course around the corn maze, and concludes with a ceremony recognizing those who are currently living with cancer, those who fought bravely but lost their battle, and celebrating those who have conquered it. There will be a wagon and other vehicles available for those who wish to participate but don’t feel able to walk.

“Since its inception Circle of Victory has helped hundreds of people from all over Greene County with relief from the financial burden that is caused by cancer,” Greene Memorial Hospital & Soin Medical Center Community Outreach Coordinator and COV Organizer Donna Saraga. “COV donations help to underwrite cancer treatment and provide assistance with medications, wigs, prostheses and other financial burdens. One hundred percent of donated funds benefit cancer patients directly.”

Individuals, organizations, businesses, and churches representing a cross section of Greene County have stepped up over the years to raise nearly $350,000 to help local patients.

“One of the largest components to the walk is the teams that form, often in honor of a family member or friend who is fighting cancer or in memory of a loved one who lost their battle. These teams of 3-4 people to more than 60 people bring in additional donated dollars from their family and friends,” said Saraga.

Fairborn’s Patti Davis had a vision and created the Circle of Victory in her neighborhood of Rona Hills almost 24 years ago. She was in the midst of battling her own cancer, and discovered that two others on her street were also battling cancer. She wanted to do something to encourage them in their struggles and started a walk. She later approached the Foundation and asked to take it over which the Foundation has done since.

Registration is now open for the walk on Oct.1 by visiting www.circleofvictory.org. Walk registration is $25 until Sept. 31 and day of the event $30. The farm is located at 2323 US Route 42.
