FAIRBORN — Locals are invited to hook a worm, cast a line and reel ‘er in Saturday, May 13 at Community Park during the 11th Annual Dr. Michael L. Horton Fairborn Fishing Derby.
Fish are to be caught and released with no fishing license required to participate. Prizes will be awarded to those who catch the most fish, the longest fish and the smallest fish. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., but the derby will take place 10 a.m.-noon. Participation is free and open to all, but they will need to bring their own fishing pole and bait.
For young Fairborn citizens who are feeling rusty in their fishing skills, the city has them covered. It will host Passport to Fishing Class 9-10 a.m. Saturday, May 13, prior to kicking off the fishing derby. Up to 40 individuals aged 4-17 years old who participate in the free class will learn how to cast, tie knots, identify fish and more. Preregistration is required to attend and can be done by calling the Fairborn Parks and Recreation Division office at 937-754-3090.
“Over the past 10 years, hundreds of adults and children and their families have participated in the derby,” a press release highlighting the event said. “This event gives children the opportunity to learn how to fish and provides a great way for families to spend time together, to learn about nature and activities they can do outdoors and enjoy time outside.”
