XENIA — Robin Heise and the Greene County Records and Archives staff received an award Thursday for their educational outreach program.

Dawne Dewey, head of the Special Collections and Archives Department at Wright State University and Galen Wilson of the National Archives and Records Administration, presented the 2016 Ohio Records Advisory Board Archives Achievement Award at the Greene County Commissioners meeting.

“Our mission is to advocate for good records management and protection of the resources in the state, to raise awareness of existence of historical records and to advocate for their use and preservation,” Wilson said.

The Achievement Award recognizes outstanding programs, opportunities or events sponsored by local governments or institutions.

“Greene County has one of the more active and involved records and management programs in the state of Ohio,” Wilson said.

This award specifically recognizes the educational program that Heise and her staff began within the last two years. The program brings records into classrooms in order to help develop students’ research and analysis skills while fostering an appreciation for local history.

” … They have done a phenomenal job of taking history out into the community, specifically to schools,” Dewey said upon presentation of the award. “That is something that not a lot of counties are able to do but they have done it. They have shown enthusiasm and drive and have really exposed so many children in Greene County to its history — which is phenomenal.”

Archives and Records staff made the experience hands-on for students by creating and bringing copies of the records to classrooms for students to not only look at and read, but touch and feel, too.

“What we sought to do was find some of our more interesting records that we have in the archives that people don’t really know about … so that they can learn about the county through our records and the importance of our records,”Heise said.

Heise noted that one of her team members, Elise Kelly, visited more than 1,700 students this school year with the program.
