FAIRBORN — The Fairborn Police Department is pleased to announce that School Resource Officer Nathan Penrod graduated on Sept. 30 from the State of Ohio DARE instructional program.

Penrod will teach the DARE Program concepts to fifth grade elementary students in the Fairborn City School District. As part of his training, Officer Penrod is certified in K-4 (kindergarten through fourth grade visitation), elementary and middle school curriculums.

DARE is internationally recognized and was created in 1983 by the Los Angeles Police Department and Unified School District. The program provides students with the skills necessary to recognize and resist pressures to experiment with drugs and violence. The lessons emphasize self-esteem, decision making and interpersonal communication skills. Students are taught the consequences of drug abuse, conflict resolution and positive alternatives to substance abuse.

In order to become certified, Penrod had to complete two weeks, or 80 hours, of intensive training by Ohio’s accredited DARE Training Center. Officers are trained by the Law Enforcement Foundation, the only entity in Ohio authorized to train DARE Officers.

Penrod is a 10-year veteran of the Fairborn Police Department and is excited about implementing the program in January 2017.
