FAIRBORN — Citizens of Fairborn will be asked in the upcoming election to pass a levy, Issue 19, that will support the construction of new primary and intermediate school buildings.
The bond levy is for school construction and is 2.7 mills for a 37-year period. The permanent improvement levy is .25 mill for a 23-year period to be used for acquisition, construction, enlargement and renovation financing.
If passed, it would generate approximately $1,708,000 annually, translating to an owner of a Fairborn property worth $100,000 paying $103.25 per year, or $1.99 per week.
If it passes, the Fairborn community will see new primary and intermediate school buildings go up, as well as the district addressing the need for technology within Baker Middle School and Fairborn High School. Superintendent of Fairborn City Schools Mark North said in a previous interview that funds generated by the levy could not be used to support salaries or day-to-day operations.
The levy funds will not support the full cost of the project, approximately $58 million. The district has been working with the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission since talks of new schools first surfaced. The OFCC has agreed to fund approximately 40 percent of the project, leaving FCS to ask the Fairborn community for their support.
The OFCC “is responsible for guiding capital projects for state agencies, state-supported universities and community colleges, including Ohio’s comprehensive public K-12 school construction and renovation program, and managing the grants process for cultural facilities and school security programs,” according to its website.
