JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP — Jefferson Township voters are being asked to approve an additional .9 mill, five-year levy Nov. 8.

If passed, Issue 7 will generate $41,000 annually and will cost the owner of a $100,000 home $31.50 per year. The money is necessary to help make up for the loss of the estate tax, which was eliminated by Ohio.

“We depended really a lot on estate tax,” Fiscal Officer Linda Fliehman said. “We no longer receive that since 2013. We really counted on that money to boost our general fund. With these state funding cuts … our general fund is starting to deplete somewhat.”

Fliehman said the money would be used for repairs, possible road improvements and other daily expenses. If voters turn Issue 7 down, the township will keep trying until it passes, she said, adding that there isn’t much more spending she can cut.

“I’ve just about cut all the expenses that I can,” Fliehman said. “I can’t cut much else out of there.”
