Hawks win on the road over Sidney SIDNEY — Courtnie Spain fanned 15 Sidney batters, and the Fairborn Skyhawks went on the road to beat the Yellow Jackets 3-1 on Friday evening.
Spain (9-3) gave up two hits, hit one batter and walked just one in the victory for Fairborn (14-5, 6-2 GWOC South). She had at least one strikeout in six of the seven innings she pitched for the complete game. Sidney’s lone run was unearned.
“Courtnie was throwing the ball pretty good, and Sidney was swinging at high pitches so she went there a lot,” said Fairborn head coach Bob Shively. “
At the plate, Fairborn struck out once and walked just once. Jenifer Neel led the cause with a 3-for-4 outing with two RBIs and a stolen base. Sarah Lilley went 1-for-3 with a double, Kylie Wallace went 2-for-3, Chelsea Reed went 1-for-3 with a run scored and Becca Davis scored a run.
With the team struggling with injury issues, Fairborn has seen several players step up and perform at the plate when needed, including Lilley, who herself is coming back from an ACL injury, as well as Neel and Wallace. Wallace was originally slated to play on the junior varsity team, but she has yet to play a game at anything other than the varsity level.
“She’s been a pleasant surprise,” Shively said. “Each game has been different people stepping up and hitting. We wish they’d all step up at the same time and hit to not make things so nerve-wracking, but to battle through all those injuries and still be 14-5, I’m pretty happy with that. I’m proud of how they’ve battled.”
