Fairborn baseball edges Miamisburg FAIRBORN — Jaycen Newsome worked out of a jam in the seventh to lead the Skyhawks to a 4-3 victory over Miamisburg on Wednesday night.
Newsome (5-1) gave up 11 hits but struck out six. The Vikings had the bases loaded in the seventh inning with one out, but only got one across as the freshman slinger struck out the next batter and forced a groundout to end the game.
“He gave up 11 hits, but he let the defense play and he got the strikeouts when he needed them,” said Fairborn head coach Rob Smith. “We could’ve folded, but we finally got over the hump.”
Miamisburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings, but Fairborn (8-8, 2-4 GWOC?South) tied it up after an RBI double from A.J. Johnson and an RBI single from Jason Moorman. The Hawks scored twice more in the bottom of the fifth on a 2-RBI single from Zac Gillespie.
The win was a strong bounceback from a tough 3-0 loss to Piqua on Tuesday night.
“The kids fought back tonight,” Smith said. “When we play good defense, we can win these tough games. I’m proud of the kids.”
