Beavers and Skyhawks show solid results at FHS tri-meet
FAIRBORN — Skyhawk senior Brian Jennings set personal records in winning both the shot put and discus events on Tuesday night at Fairborn’s tri-meet against Beavercreek and Miamisburg.
The senior Jennings, who is in just his second year of competing in track and field, won the discus first with a distance of 118-feet-7-inches, then followed that up by winning the shot put with a distance of 51-1.
“This is great. It’s only my second year doing this,” Jennings said. “I’m still inexperienced and I have a lot more to learn. It was great for us to come out and break PRs. We’re all just now learning.”
Jennings’ teammate, Marcus Williams, took second in the shot put. Beavercreek’s Tim Turner was third. In the discus, Fairborn’s John Hood finished second. In the girls’ throwing events, Fairborn sophomore Alex Smith finished second in the shot put.
Williams said he picked up the throwing events naturally, but he’s still learning the technique, which utilizes lower body as well as upper body strength.
“It’s all about hips and legs,” Williams said. “I’ve seen guys who were smaller and skinnier than me throw farther. It’s all about speed, technique and the lower body.”
In racing events, Fairborn’s Jordan Redd comfortably swept both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. The sophomore, who said his goal this season was qualifying for the state meet, has been working more actively in the weight room to improve his size.
“I noticed that everybody who beat me last year was pretty good-sized,” Redd said. “I think I’m more physically mature this year.”
In girls’ events, second-place Beavercreek had winners in Emily Brun in the high jump and Ashley Brost in the pole vault. Fairborn’s Jocelyn Byrd won the long jump (13-feet-8-inches).
Other girls’ events: Beavercreek finished second in the 4x800, 4x200, 4x100 and 4x400 relays; Fairborn’s Hannah Baxter finished second in the 100 meter hurdles; Beavercreek’s Sydney Leiher was second in the 1600 and 300 hurdles; Fairborn’s Chelsea Davidson was second in the 800; and Corinna Clevinger was second in the pole vault.
In the boys’ events, Fairborn was the top finisher in the 4x200 and 4x100 relays. Fairborn’s Jerimiha Stubblefield was second in the 100 dash; Beavercreek’s Kyle Topper was second in the 800 run; Fairborn’s Devon Climmons was second in the 400 dash; and Fairborn’s Ryan Vance tied for second in the pole vault.
Miamisburg finished first in both the boys’ and girls’ team scoring.
