Hawks sweep Bucs to win South Division XENIA — Winning a GWOC South division title is sweet.
Winning that title on your county-rival's home court, now that is even sweeter.
In a game postponed more than once due to the recent snow storm, Fairborn used a dominating fourth quarter to knock off Xenia, 55-51, on Saturday afternoon at the Blue Pit.
The win gave Fairborn a season-sweep of the Lady Bucs and gave the Hawks the GWOC South championship with a record of 7-1. Fairborn is 16-3 overall. It was the final regular season game for Xenia, which finished at 14-6 overall and 5-3 in league play.
Fairborn led 28-26 at halftime, but the Lady Bucs came out of the intermission with a spark and regained the lead, taking a 46-41 advantage into the final frame.
But, the Lady Skyhawks cranked up the defense over the last eight minutes, holding the home team to a mere five points in the deciding quarter to come away with the road win and conference title.
Brooklyn Pumroy continued her year-long stellar play with 20 points for Fairborn. Jaymee Veney added 14 points, Alexis Gassion tallied nine, and the duo of Brianna Breeding and Chelsea Reed netted five points apiece.
Xenia was led by Brittiney Latimer with 19 points and Jessica Alexander tossed in 11. Brianne Thornton scored eight points, Cassie Whitley had seven and Jenna Williams scored six.
