Longtime professor, trauma surgeon assumes new leadership role within WSU Boonshoft School of Medicine
DAYTON — Wright State University has named Mary McCarthy, M.D., FACS, chair of the Department of Surgery in the Boonshoft School of Medicine. A faculty member with the medical school since 1991, McCarthy is also a full professor of surgery and chief of the Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Emergency Surgery.

McCarthy has been affiliated with Miami Valley Hospital since 1991 as well. Until her recent appointment as department chair, she served as director of trauma services for the hospital, overseeing the region’s only Level I Trauma Center. She also previously served as surgical director of the hospital’s intensive care unit and associate medical director of CareFlight, the area’s only air ambulance system.

McCarthy earned her medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis after graduating from Stanford University with a bachelor of science degree in biology. She completed a general surgery residency program at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and Affiliated Hospitals in Dallas.

McCarthy is board certified in both general and critical care surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, where she has served on several state and national committees. She is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Society of Critical Care Medicine the American Medical Association, the Association for Surgical Education and the Association of Women Surgeons.

An accomplished surgeon and educator, McCarthy has received numerous awards and honors, including Wright State’s Excellence in Professional Service Award, the Distinguished Member and Nina Starr Braunwald Awards from the Association of Women Surgeons, the Patients’ First Award for Physician Excellence (twice) from Miami Valley Hospital and the Dayton Business Journal’s Healthcare Hero Award for Innovation.

In addition to her work in teaching and patient care, McCarthy is an active researcher and regularly publishes in a variety of professional journals. In recent years, her work has appeared in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, the Journal of Trauma, Surgery, the American Journal of Surgery, the Journal of Emergency Medicine and the Journal of Neurotrauma.
