XENIA — OSU Extension Greene County is set to offer a series of classes for those at risk of cardiovascular disease or for who have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. The classes are designed to help educate attendees on how to reduce their risk of disease by keeping their blood pressure and cholesterol within healthier limits and by reducing their stress level.

Million Hearts: Improving Cardiovascular Health Across Ohio is a series of three classes set to meet from 6-8 p.m., Sept. 16, 23 and 30 at the OSU Extension Greene County offices in Xenia. A reunion class will also be held Dec. 16.

Instructors will offer a series of cooking classes for individuals with cardiovascular disease, those at risk of the disease, as well as their family members or caretakers.

Free health screenings for Cardiovascular Disease will be provided at the first class by Ohio State University Nursing Students starting at 5:30 p.m. Cholesterol checks, blood pressure, height, weight and BMI readings will be taken. It is not necessary to fast before the screenings. Attendees must attend the classes to receive the health screenings.

Instructors will discuss how to lower sodium, use herbs and spices, reduce saturated and trans-fats and ways to reduce or cope with stress. Class participants will receive recipe booklets, watch cooking demonstrations and taste foods made with lower amounts of fat, sugar and salt. Participants will taste main dishes, side dishes and desserts.

Enrollment is limited to the first 40 who sign up. Pre-registration is required to attend the class. The fee for this class will be $30 per person for all three classes plus the reunion. For registration information, call 937-372-9971, ext. 116, or register online at regonline.com/millionhearts.
