Gloria serves up taco pizza

How about dropping in and joining me on a sewing day?

Today’s projects are for my brother Micah and his wife Rose who are leaving on a trip. Mom opened her house for the event at hand.

This morning I had some dirty laundry to wash before fetching our horse Sapphire and hitching her to the buggy. Thanks to my hubby, Daniel, who had turned the buggy and backed it into a position easy for me to hitch up and leave with the children.

Julia and Austin were delighted to be going to “Dawdy’s” (Grandpa’s) as they settled down beside me in our enclosed buggy. I called to Sapphire and gently slapped the reins and off we were.

Upon arriving at my parents we tied the horse and stopped in the shop to see Daniel where he was building furniture. “Hi Daddy” we called out to him. Momentarily he dropped his work long enough to chat a bit before we headed on to the house where several ladies were already sewing.

I knocked as I opened the door and stepped inside. Yes, the kitchen was a whir of activity with a total of four sewing machines and two sergers. There were ladies and girls all over sewing, ironing, and cooking. After taking off my coat and pitching it in my little nook in the entrance where I always keep our wraps at Mom’s house I scooped up my 4 ½ month old nephew. He beamed with delight as I talked to him. I was really impressed when I even got him to giggle for me.

Soon one of my sisters volunteered to hold him while I took my place at a sewing machine and started sewing pants pockets together. Among the list of things to sew was four pairs of denim pants for Micah. Pants have never really been a favorite of mine when it comes to sewing yet in reality they are very easy to make. Sewing with six other ladies made the time fly on wings. Between potty trips with two-year-old Austin things progressed well . Most of the time our tongues were wagging as fast as the sewing machines were humming as we swapped various tips about sewing and figured out measurements of pant pieces making sure everything fit together properly. I absolutely loved spending time together as we laughed and talked.

Somehow we got on the subject of angels and how some people have actually seen angels or have had very real dreams of angels. I shared the story of Daniel’s brother, Tobias, who years ago woke up and told his parents and siblings of how he had dreamt of angels surrounding their house. Immediately his younger sister, 9 years at the time, piped up and said,“Last night I prayed that God would put angels around our house.” Does God really hear our cries for Him? Does he really love us that deeply? Life really can be intensely trying but, yes, God is still bigger.

All too soon it was time for lunch. It was hard to stop sewing, yet lunch looked amazing! Mom’s taco pizza was accompanied by sweet corn, tossed salad, applesauce, custard, cottage cheese salad, and homemade cookies, and bars and tea.

Everything was delicious! I hadn’t had the taco pizza for a long time even that it had been one of my favorite standbys for quite a while. I had simply forgotten about it. I’m eager to go home and make it again.

By the way, I forgot to mention the little bonus I had at lunch time. My husband joined us for lunch so I got to eat with him!

After lunch several ladies washed dishes. No, we don’t have dishwashers unless you count little girls “dish washers.” (which they don’t really appreciate). While several work on the dishes the rest resumed to the sewing or put their babies to sleep. Guess what I did after putting Austin to sleep? I grabbed my paper and pen and started writing to all my dear friends across the USA. Thanks to all of you who have shown your support in various ways whether it be by mail or giving a message through others who know me. Your support makes a difference!
