National Guard assists Greenon with move

ENON — Troops from the Springfield-based 178th Fighter Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard were on hand at Hustead Elementary Friday morning, June 27, to assist Greenon Local Schools with its district-wide move.

Before undertaking the move as part of its consolidation efforts this summer, Greenon school officials requested assistance from the Ohio National Guard in an effort to reduce costs. The troops also volunteered their services on Friday, June 20, and Monday, June 23.

“While our consolidation is expected to save taxpayers about $585,000 a year, we recognized early on that the process to realize those savings would create some moving expenses,” said Principal Darrin Knapke, who led the consolidation process for the district. “We are incredibly grateful to the men and women of the 178th not only for their assistance with our move but also for their service and sacrifice for our country.”

The Board decided to consolidate the district beginning with the 2015-16 school year to address a looming financial deficit and declining student enrollment. As part of the consolidation, Hustead Elementary closed as a school at the end of the 2013-14 school year. Beginning this fall, students in kindergarten and 1st Grade will attend Enon Primary School; 2nd through 6th Grade students will attend Indian Valley Intermediate School; and 7th through 12th Grade Students will attend Greenon Junior/Senior High School.

“Along with the National Guard, our custodial and maintenance staff has done a fantastic job organizing and executing the move this summer,” said Knapke. “We are very appreciative of everyone’s work to get our buildings ready for another fantastic school year at Greenon Local Schools.”
