Medical students to hold canned food drive

April 22, 2014

FAIRBORN — Medical students from the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine Phi Rho Sigma Medical Society are sponsoring a canned food drive from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 26. All food collected will be given to the Dayton Foodbank, which distributes food to the hungry throughout Montgomery, Greene and Preble counties.

Student volunteers visited neighborhoods near the Wright State University campus on Friday, April 18, to hand out flyers and inform residents about the event. They will return on April 26 to collect donations of nonperishable food items.

Donations also will be accepted in collection barrels on the WSU campus at White Hall, located just off Center Road, and in the café area in the WSU Dunbar library, located just off Loop Road. Collection barrels also will be at the WSU Student Union in the Union Market near the Cyber Café and along the railing in the upper atrium near the bookstore.

Neil Knight, a first-year medical student, said the Dayton Foodbank needs canned soups, canned meats, canned tuna, canned fruit, canned vegetables, nuts and seeds, rice and beans, peanut butter and jelly, macaroni and cheese, cereal, baking mixes, pastas and canned sauces, evaporated or powdered milk, puddings, cat and dog food, household products, toilet paper, tissues and towels, and soap.

Two Men and a Truck, Chipotle, Meijer and World Digital Imaging are cosponsoring the event.
