Winter Guard wins state championship

FAIRBORN — The Fairborn High School Winter Guard won the state championship for Senior Flag Line at the Ohio Indoor Performance Association (OIPA) Championships on Saturday at Wapakenta High School.

The Fairborn team finished with a score of 90.27 and were the only high school group that had a score greater than 90. There were seven teams that competed in the Senior Flag Line class.

This is the fourth year that Fairborn Winter Guard has won the OIPA State Championship for Senior Flag Line. As a result, they have been promoted up to the Scholastic Regional A class for next year. Fairborn was recognized two years ago for competing every year since OIPA began in 2008.

The Fairborn winter guard currently has 10 members, and several of the member are 7th or 8th graders from Baker Middle School competing with the high school team instead of a separate Junior Flag Guard. Fairborn Jr. Flag Line competed in 2009-2011 before the decision was made to combine to form one line. They won state championships in 2010 and 2011.

Fairborn Sr Flag Line has won state championships five of the seven years that they have been involved (2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014) in the flag line class. In 2009 they competed in Scholastic A class and were state champions. In 2010 they competed as Fairborn Independent and came in second place in Independent A Class.

Megan Welch is the current team captain. She is a senior, and this is her fifth year winning a state championship. She won four years with the high school, and one year with the Junior Flag Guard.

Additionally, there are three other seniors this year, Casey Taylor winner her second championship, Chelsey Sierecki also winning her second championship, and Brianna Catterlin.
