XENIA — A group of employees from the City of Xenia have filed a Petition for Representation Election with the State Employment Relations Board.
The petition seeks certification of a bargaining unit including several positions under the operations of the City Manager’s Office and Finance Office.
According to the City of Xenia, the Petition was filed on March 7 of this year.
“We had heard some employees were investigating forming a union last December, but we only found out for sure when we received notification from SERB,” Xenia City Manager Brent Merriman said. “There are about 20 employees, one third under the City Manager’s umbrella and the rest in the Finance Office.”
The union seeking to represent the bargaining unit is Ohio Council 8, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO (AFSCME).
The union currently represents the City’s public service maintenance, wastewater and water employees.
Filing the Petition for Representation Election is the first step in the process to seek union representation.
Upon certification of the bargaining unit, SERB will determine the date and time for conducting a secret ballot election. The majority of votes cast in the secret ballot election will determine whether or not AFSCME becomes the representative for the bargaining unit.
“The process is regulated by SERB to have a ballot,” Merriman said. “We have to post a notice for employees that there will be a vote to form a union. If the majority of those who cast a ballot vote for the measure, the union will be certified.”
