ARCANUM - A teenage female middle school student was seriously injured Friday morning after being struck by a vehicle near Arcanum-Butler Local School just after 7:15 a.m. CareFlight transported the girl to Dayton Children’s Hospital where her condition was listed in fair as of Friday afternoon.

According to Arcanum-Butler Superintendent John Stephens the female student, who was on her way to school, used the crosswalk as she should have and was not at fault in any way. The crossing guard, which is a school employee and trained by the Arcanum Police Department, was safely crossing the student when she was hit by the vehicle, at the intersection of Main St. and Trojan Avenue.

“We will continue to review our safety procedures that are currently in place.” Stephens told The Daily Advocate. “We appreciate the quick response by Arcanum Rescue and the crossing guard at the scene.”

A one-call alert went out shortly after 8:15 a.m. to notify Arcanum parents of the incident. The school posted this message on their website: “A student was injured on the way to school this morning. Her family has been notified, and she is being transported to medical facilities for further care. The Arcanum-Butler community extends our prayers to the student at this time.”

The incident remains under investigation at this time.
